My Approach to Clinical Supervision
I offer clinical supervision from a relational, psychodynamic perspective. I understand supervision as a professional space in which therapists can bring their clinical challenges with openness, honesty and vulnerability. This depth of openness does not occur immediately, but develops over time through consistency, trust and continuity.
Being able to reflect on your internal responses in relation to your patients can open an important doorway into the unconscious processes operating within the therapeutic relationship. Supervision then becomes a place where these processes, including their push and pull, projections and projective identifications, and experiences of transference and countertransference, can be thought about and analysed in service to the patient.
From a psychodynamic and depth psychotherapy perspective, the framework from which I work in supervision, patients often enter therapy with the conscious wish to feel better and to work through historical and current relational wounds. At the same time, unconscious processes can shape and at times dominate the therapeutic relationship. For example, whilst a patient may consciously hope for a different relational experience, their unconscious may recreate familiar and distressing relational patterns with the therapist.
The task of the therapist is to remain open to the analysis of these processes, so that they can be metabolised and responded to differently. This can support the patient in experiencing a new relational possibility and in developing greater capacity to reflect on and respond to relationships in different and healthy ways. Supervision supports this reflective work through dialogue and clinical thinking, whilst the responsibility for clinical decisions and practice remains with the therapist.
Central to my approach to supervision is to make room for experiences that are unthinkable or unspeakable, both for the patient and for the therapist. Whilst this can be challenging, it is often professionally enriching and integral to ethical and effective clinical practice.
Sessions
Individual supervision is offered on a once monthly or twice monthly basis, offering a supportive structure for therapists working in private practice. Some clinicians also choose to attend weekly supervision, which is welcome.
The frequency of supervision is your choice and should meet the requirements of your professional body or employer. Once an agreed frequency is in place, supervision is understood as a commitment to attend at the agreed times. Consistency and continuity are central to meaningful professional learning and development over time.
Who I Supervise
I supervise qualified psychotherapists, counsellors, trainees and mental health nurses. I work with clinical material involving adult patients aged 18 and over.
Supervision with me can include work with individuals, couples, adult relational work and groups. For mental health nurses and group therapists, I recommend group supervision, as this offers a multi-dimensional perspective on organisational, social and unconscious processes through the reflections of the group.
As a clinical supervisor, I hold responsibility for attending to ethical practice, and concerns relating to fitness to practise, should these arise.
When supervising mental health nurses, supervision is offered as reflective clinical supervision with a psychodynamic and relational focus. This work attends to the psychological, emotional and ethical dimensions of clinical practice, including the impact of organisational and relational dynamics. It does not replace profession specific supervision, managerial oversight or governance requirements set by employers or the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and nurses remain accountable to their employing organisation and professional regulator.

About Me

I am a qualified clinical supervisor, having completed my supervision training at the Institute of Group Analysis (IGA) in London, informed by group analytic and psychodynamic theories. I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist and have undertaken post qualification training in trauma treatment and relationship therapy.
I originally trained as a transpersonal psychotherapist at the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education (CCPE) in London, informed by Jungian, transpersonal and psychodynamic theories. My clinical and supervisory work is rooted in the psychodynamic approach. I receive regular psychodynamic supervision of my work.
